Pocahontas

Truth

Everybody who is familiar with Walt Disney probably knows Pocahontas. It's the story about a British ship called the Susan Constant sails to the 'New World' from England, carrying British settlers of the Virginia Company. On board are Captain John Smith and the voyage's leader Governor Ratcliffe, who seeks large amounts of gold in the New World to assure a strong position at the British court.

After doing some little research I have found out that both Captain John Smith and the voyage's leader Governor Ratcliffe were people who have actually lived and their story somewhat matches with the story of Pocahontas. This was something new for me since I didn't know until recently that the Walt Disney story: Pocahontas was actually based on true historical events.

Anyways to go back to the story: Along the way, the Susan Constant is caught in a North Atlantic storm, and Smith saves a young, inexperienced Thomas from drowning. In the Powhatan Tribe in the New World, Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, dreads being possibly wed to Kocoum, a brave warrior whom she sees as too "serious" with her spirited personality. Chief Powhatan gives Pocahontas her deceased mother's necklace as a present. Pocahontas, along with her friends, the gluttonous raccoon Meeko and hummingbird Flit, visit Grandmother Willow, a spiritual talking willow tree, and speaks of a possibly prophetic dream involving a spinning arrow, and her confusion regarding what her "path" in life should be. Grandmother Willow then alerts Pocahontas to the arriving Englishmen.

About this part, I haven't really found that much out. This is pure fiction as history doesn't talk about any other people in the Powhatan Tribe then Pocahontas and her father. The Powhatan Tribe is real though. Well to be exact, it is the name of a Virginia Indian confederation of tribes. (It is estimated that there were about 14,000–21,000 Powhatan people in eastern Virginia when the English settled Jamestown in 1607.) They were also known as Virginia Algonquians though, as they spoke an eastern-Algonquian language known as Powhatan or Virginia Algonquin.

Back to the story: Governor Ratcliffe has the fortress Jamestown built in a wooded clearing and immediately has the crewmen dig for gold. Smith departs to explore the wilderness and encounters Pocahontas. The pair quickly bonds, fascinated by each other's worlds. The two fall in love, countermanding Chief Powhatan's orders to keep away from the Englishmen after Kocoum and other warriors engage them in a fight. Meanwhile, Meeko meets Percy, Ratcliffe's spoilt dog, and becomes the bane of his existence. Pocahontas introduces Smith to Grandmother Willow and avoids two other crewmen; however, Pocahontas' friend Nakoma discovers her relationship with Smith and warns Kocoum. Later, Thomas and Kocoum witness the two kissing. In a jealous rage, Kocoum attacks and tries to kill Smith but is himself killed by Thomas. An enraged Chief Powhatan declares war on the crewmen, and Smith is to be executed at sunrise.

Thomas warns the crewmen of Smith's capture, and Ratcliffe rallies the men to battle as an excuse to annihilate the tribe and find their non-existent gold. A guilt-ridden Pocahontas visits Grandmother Willow's tree, where Meeko hands her Smith's compass. Pocahontas realizes Smith's compass was the spinning arrow from her prophetic dream, which leads her to her destiny. She successfully stops Smith's execution and convinces her father to cease the hostilities between the two groups. All parties accept gracefully, but Ratcliffe tries to shoot Chief Powhatan in anger with Smith taking the bullet. The governor is captured and arrested by the crewmen. In the end, Smith is forced to return home to receive medical treatment, with Pocahontas and Chief Powhatan's blessing to return in the future.

Just like before, History states that Jamestown was the first successful English settlement on the mainland of North America. It was even named after King James I of England, Jamestown was founded in the Colony of Virginia on May 14, 1607. The execution is also a true fact as Smith was captured in December 1607, while seeking food. He was taken to the chief of the Powhatans and here the chief decided to execute him. The execution was successfully stopped by Pocahontas however. But why was Smith searching for food all alone while being such an important figure? You see, history states that the settlers were running low on food supplies and even though the fact that the Indians kindly brought the British settlement some food, it was not nearly enough and the actually Smith wrote that more than half of them died.

Even the wound Smith had received and the return to England are real! It is recorded that Capt. John Smith was severely injured by an accidental gunpowder explosion in his canoe which decided his fate for him; he sailed back to England for treatment in October 1609.

In the end I was quite surprised by all the historical facts which were put in this story. I do have to note tough that this only applies for Pocahontas I. Pocahontas II is purely fictional as I haven't found any historical facts consisting of Pocahontas.

My story doesn't end here though! I thought of a small theory... Well actually it's more of a story.

Theory (Actually it's more of a story)

Here is a possible non-fictional story which could have replaced Pocahontas II:

After the department of John Smith Pocahontas returned to her tribe and she started to teach people in her tribe about the things she learned from John Smith. Doing this the Indians started to develop better and better ways to do all kinds of stuff. An example could be an improvement of the agriculture. The first few years this would go alright. More and more Indians took interest in the culture of the Settlers and they started to learn more and more of them. At some point in time however, new settlers arrived and they had bought loads of guns with them. The setters forced the Indians to move into smaller and smaller unknown land of exile. While doing so the settlers didn't see any shame in pillaging them, killing a few male Indians and finally raping a few Indian girls. At some point the Indians just snapped inclusively Pocahontas who had also been raped due to her being the daughter of the chief. What I didn't tell before is that the settlers brought a lot of deceases with them which were very deadly for the Indians due to their underdevelopment in the medical sector. Of course while raping this Indian girls, the settlers also passed on some sexual deceases. Pocahontas was one of the many woman who received said decease.

The Indians attacked the settlers after they snapped. What did they have to lose after all? The Indian tribes were dying and sick. It was only a matter of time before they would be annihilated. For the sake of the story let's say that Pocahontas was part of the attackers and killed a great deal of them. Some memorable moments of her on the battlefield would be: a scenario were she was holding the entrails of an English guy, a scenario were she bit the still beating heart of a Spanish person and finally shooting an arrow through a Frenchman's eyeball in which the poor individual reacted by shouting: "Sacrebleu" in pain. When asking her about it she would tell you that she is painting the settlers with beautiful red colors.

Although all the resistance, the Indians couldn't win the fights and were annihilated. Pocahontas herself was also killed in battle and for the sake of the story let us say that the one who killed her, was no one else then: ... The young, inexperienced Thomas!

Good theory, though you wrote "rapping" instead of "raping"

I've heard of this theory before. Every hear the ones about the Little Mermaid, Seven Dwarfs, and Alice in Wonderland?

Weird... I've had a friend tell me pretty much the same thing with different parts though. I guess it's a theory other people tend to think about too. XD
